Chapter 11

Seek is the tenth chapter of the Birdmen manga series. In this chapter, Karasuma apologizes to Takayama for disclosing his name during the blackout fight. The Bird Club also decides on a professor for their squadron.

Summary[]

Two unnamed researchers analyze the clip of Karasuma and Takayama fighting against the blackout. After concluding that the Birdmen have multiplied somehow, one of the researchers insinuates that he will leave the lab and head to Tokyo, to the site of the Birdmen sightings.

Meanwhile, Karasuma consults Sagisawa on what to do regarding the clip, worried that their identities will be revealed. Sagisawa assures him that the chance of being recognized by those who don't already know are astronomically low, and also tells him that he should apologize to Takayama for shouting his name. Though Karasuma initially reacts defensively regarding this, after contemplating for a while, he concludes that if he truly wants to follow through with his resolution to change, he cannot continue making excuses and pretending to ignore his mistakes. Hence, he confronts Takayama during school via telepathy to apologize.

Takayama verbally tells Karasuma that it's difficult to hear each other while not transformed, and takes him to the roof for a private conversation. Karasuma asks Takayama how he accesses the roof, considering that the door is permanently locked, and Takayama grabs Karasuma by the waist and shows him how to reach the roof via climbing a nearby tree from the window.

After babbling nervously for a while, Karasuma finally apologizes to Takayama, who easily forgives him. Karasuma then asks about the use of telepathy being exclusive to their transformed state, and concludes that the ability to hear voices is related to the sender's output. He then tells Takayama that mastering the ability to communicate telepathically may be the key to their survival, since it allows them to collaborate with great precision. Currently, they're wholly dependent on Takayama, but with the way things are speeding up, even he might not be able to keep pace with these changes. Karasuma hypothesizes that Birdmen possess abilities or qualities that reveal themselves only in a group setting. Takayama tells Karasuma that if the blackout had come to any of the other three, they probably would have died. Intuitively, he suspects that the strength of the "voices" from those in danger are correlated with the desires of their hearts. He further assures Karasuma that Karasuma hadn't desired for someone to save him, but that the wings must have responded to his wishes nonetheless.

Perturbed by this conversation, Karasuma heads to Sagisawa's place with him in order to discuss their situation. Karasuma has concluded that in order to find a way to return to normal, they need to consult a specialist who can tell them more about their wings. Karasuma asks Sagisawa whether he has any connections relevant to their search; Sagisawa tells him that though he has multiple relatives who are professors or doctors, they can't be trusted. Sagisawa asks Karasuma what he's looking for, and Karasuma tells him he would like a biologist who isn't too talkative, greedy, or untrustworthy. Finally, he also requests someone who is nice to children.

With these conditions in mind, a list of potential candidates is brought to the second Bird Club meeting. Takayama recognizes one of the professors from the files, Tatsume Naoyuki, whom he had saved before. Not only is he already aware of the existence of Birdmen, he is also fully qualified from a research perspective, and Karasuma considers him an excellent choice until he asks Takayama about Tatsume's personality. Takayama describes Tatsume as someone who is stubborn, unwilling to give up, immature, and exhibits problematic behavior, which the Bird Club is less than thrilled about.

Meanwhile, Professor Tatsume is running simulations of flying humans in a dark laboratory, accompanied by a flashy woman. He murmurs Takayama's given name, Sou, while watching these simulations.
