New Gear is the eleventh chapter of the Birdmen manga series. In this chapter, the Bird Club kidnaps Tatsume, and attends a lecture of his before meeting him in their human forms.

Summary[]

The Bird Club gathers atop the sky terrace in preparation for their upcoming kidnapping of Professor Tatsume Naoyuki. Firstly, they master the art of creating basic masks and visors with their wing mass, and additionally, they also give each other designated codenames, in order to avoid doxxing each other. Takayama is designated as "Red", Umino as "Blue", Sagisawa as "White", Karasuma as "Black", and Kamoda as "Green". Though Karasuma is still unsure about this course of action, the Bird Club takes flight regardless.

Meanwhile, in a different part of the city, the same flashy lady as before is chasing Professor Tatsume. He is able to shake her off, and quickly dashes around the corner before promptly getting abducted by the Bird Club. Karasuma remarks on Takayama's ability to located Tatsume so easily; Takayama tells him that Tatsume is also a very "loud" person, like Karasuma.

Tatsume is gagged and taken to a crane on a high-rise building midway through construction, where his glasses are also confiscated. Sagisawa asks if this is going too far; Karasuma tells him that they can't trust anyone who can't handle pressure or wants to take advantage of them. Tatsume, unnerved and confused at this situation, confesses to stalking Takayama with great restraint completely unprompted, believing it to be the reason for his kidnapping.

Tatsume reveals that he not only knows Takayama's name, but also his address and the school he attends. This bothers Karasuma, who hadn't realized they were so close, but Takayama tells him that he only disclosed his contact information because Tatsume had threatened to kill himself at the time. In a fit of rage at the absurdity of the situation, Karasuma accidentally yells out Takayama's name once again, and Umino and Kamoda also follow suit in the accidental doxxing.

Meanwhile, Tatsume is beginning to put the situation together. He's figured out that the Bird Club isn't here to punish him, but rather, they want something from him, despite the fact that he doesn't know them personally. Karasuma tells him that whether they can discuss the main subject depends on the kind of person Tatsume is. Tatsume politely requests a change in location, because forcing one's opponent to reveal their hand without showing your own is unfair, and Karasuma agrees to meet him for lunch. Sagisawa and Karasuma believe they can trust him; Takayama tells them that Tatsume stopped following him when he entered middle school, valuing Takayama's future over Tatsume's personal curiosity.

Tatsume invites the Bird Club to visit him at his research lab, and Karasuma is awkwardly stuck with Kamoda, having lost Takayama and Sagisawa (Umino, once again, is running late). Sagisawa eventually emerges from a crowd of college girls with the information that Tatsume is about to hold a lecture, and they sneak into the lecture hall together with Takayama, who had been rescuing a stray chick.

Tatsume's lecture covers topics such as biodiversity, genetics, and evolution as survival strategies. He brings up the idea of evolutionary standstill with regards to humanity, and invites the students to imagine how humankind might evolve further. Answers such as higher reproductive capacity and more efficient energy intake are proposed. He concludes his lecture with the "unknown" aspect of biology, absent in fields such as chemistry or physics, and emphasizes the importance of developing the appropriate skills in order to fully explore that unknown. After the lecture, the Bird Club heads to Tatsume's office in order to meet him. Tatsume is surprised by how young the Bird Club members are, and earnestly expresses his passion regarding their collective goal of uncovering the secrets to their wings.
