Flight Plan is the fourth chapter of the Birdmen manga series. In this chapter, Karasuma has a private conversation with Takayama about Takayama's Birdman origins, and the main cast holds their first meeting to practice their transformations.

Summary[]

The day after their first encounter with a blackout, Karasuma reflects on what Takayama's told them about the blackouts. Though Takayama doesn't understand why the blackouts appear, he does know that they persistently chase him until he can destroy them, and that they consistently appear every ten days, though this time it was sooner. The thought that he may die if he is unable to finish off the blackout haunts Karasuma, and he shows up at Takayama's place in hopes of getting a better explanation.

Upon Karasuma's arrival at Takayama's dismal and run-down home, Takayama brings Karasuma to an overgrown open lot, since his grandfather is sleeping. Karasuma is curious about Takayama's lineage; he assumes that being a Birdman is a hereditary trait. However, Takayama reveals that he, too, received his wings from a different Birdman. He recounts a plane crash in South America when he was a child, which killed both of his parents, but he was saved when a mysterious woman lets him drink her blood. With nothing but a warning about the impending blackouts and the sight of her outstretched wings, Takayama lives on, keeping the fact that he had become a Birdman in total secrecy.

Karasuma is floored at this revelation, finding himself suddenly sympathetic to Takayama. However, he quickly realizes that Takayama had remained isolated of his own volition, and instead declares Takayama a fool. Karasuma makes it clear that he will only do what's required of him in terms of flying, and staunchly refuses to become a hero of justice, regardless of what his wings might want. His ultimate goal is to return to his former body and life.

In the afternoon, Takayama meets up with Karasuma, Kamoda, and Sagisawa in the abandoned warehouse for flying practice. Takayama emphasizes the importance of perfecting their transformation, which will reduce the damage taken to their bodies. Kamoda suggests touching the transformed Takayama as a shortcut to their own transformation, since physical contact with someone who has manifested their wings will cause the other party's wings to manifest as well. This surprises Takayama, who hadn't realized that was possible.

Kamoda proposes a friendly competition to see who can strip and transform the fastest, and as the three boys begin taking off their pants, Umino bursts in, having been dismissed from class early. Mortified, Karasuma expels her from the warehouse temporarily, letting her listen to developments within through a voice call. The chapter concludes with a cacophony of chaotic yelling in the warehouse as Kamoda and Sagisawa encourage an agitated Karasuma to strip while Takayama watches on impassively.
