First Flight is the fifth chapter of the Birdmen manga series. In this chapter, Takayama teaches Karasuma, Kamoda, Sagisawa, and Umino about the basics of transformation and flight.

Summary[]

At the warehouse, Takayama continues to help Karasuma, Kamoda, and Sagisawa with perfecting their transformations (Umino is still waiting outside and listening through the speaker phone). After the three boys grab onto Takayama, they all become transformed; however, this transformation is incomplete, with the wing mass only partially covering their bodies. Takayama grabs onto Karasuma's hands, and Karasuma experiences a prickling sensation running through his body before his transformation is completed. Using the same technique, Kamoda and Sagaisawa's transformations are also completed.

However, Karasuma points out that the quality of the coating on their bodies are different than Takayama's, with Takayama's being sturdier and more armor-like. Takayama tells them that this can't be help due to their low wing mass, and that using any more wing mass for their transformations would render them unable to fly. He also showcases some other uses of wing mass, including the manifestation of blades and defensive helmets.

Umino, who has been sitting outside this entire time, wants to join in. A makeshift changing room is set up for her to change in peacefully. Takayama, remaining outside the changing room, takes her hand and completes her transformation.

Takayama then teaches them how to move their wings, explaining that he personally conceives of a neural network extending into his wings, which prompts Karasuma to wonder if this network can extend through physical contact as well. Sagisawa also brings up the question of how long their transformation will last; Takayama tells them that there's no time limit, and is dependent instead on their stamina. Lastly, he assures them that he will always come to save them, since he can sense them at all times now, though Karasuma is highly skeptical of this claim.

When night falls, the five gather at the park in order to practice flying. After a while of fruitless attempts by Karasuma, Kamoda, and Sagisawa, they take a break to eat some rice balls Kamoda had prepared beforehand. In the meantime, Takayama goes to pick up Umino, who is once again running late. Umino, who had been biking to the park, is flown the rest of the way there in Takayama's arms.

By the end of the chapter, Umino, Kamoda, and Sagisawa all mastered the basics of flying, leaving Karasuma as the only flightless member of the group.
