Overrun is the eighth chapter of the Birdmen manga series. In this chapter, Karasuma and Takayama defeat Karasuma's blackout, and Eva Oulu is introduced.
Summary[]
Above the clouds, Karasuma realizes the gaping hole in the sky is an impending blackout, and resolves to take it down, since running away isn't an option. A black coffin emerges from the hole, which closes soon after, and the coffin plunges towards the ground. Panicking at the thought of the blackout causing property damage, Karasuma grabs it, trying to keep both of them from falling. At this point, the blackout begins to transform, sprouting wing-like appendages and propellers. The top of the blackout opens up, and hits Karasuma with a blast of fire, causing him to let go of it. His helmet is dissolved from the flames.
In the distance, the blackout spawns two jet turbines, and turns to chase Karasuma. Karasuma rapidly realizes that he's outclassed by the blackout, and as he flees from it, he considers various avenues for tackling the blackout. However, before he is able to make a decision as to what he should do, the blackout fires two propellers at him, slicing both of his wings off cleanly.
Karasuma plunges towards the city, and for a moment, he's overtaken by despair before his wrath returns in full force. He is unable to regenerate his wings fully, but he has enough wing mass to guide his fall towards the water. He is cornered on the shore by the blackout, which impales him with multiple propellers. As Karasuma bleeds out, realizing that he hasn't learned or changed anything since the bus accident, he senses Takayama approaching his location.
Takayama tackles the blackout, breaking off one of the wings, and continues to make short work of the blackout. Seeing Takayama's composed, heroic form only infuriates Karasuma further, and he resolves to change, plunging a propeller into the blackout as he yells for Takayama to move aside. With this, the blackout is destroyed.
Karasuma regains consciousness in Takayama's arms as he carries them away from the original site. Karasuma, recalling his serious injuries, asks Takayama if he will die; Takayama tells him that this isn't enough to kill him. Karasuma then mutters to himself about how he is no longer human, and Takayama asks him whether that matters or not, when he had already resolved to live on. Karasuma asks Takayama about his first encounter with his own blackout, and Takayama tells him that he fared a little better, before mentioning that it felt like things had sped up for them after Takayama changed the other four. Kamoda, Sagisawa, and Umino join them in midair.
Meanwhile, at the Red Eyes Institute of Life Sciences, Eva Oulu defeats her own blackout with ease. She asks her lookout, Shinjin, about whether he has seen the Louvre's statue of the Nike of Samothrace, musing on whether its beauty is a product of its incompleteness, or whether its beauty exists in spite of its incompleteness. She tells him that the missing left foot symbolized the deliverance of a message of victory, and is disgusted by its presence in a research institute.
