Prologue 2 is the second prologue chapter of the Birdmen manga series. In this chapter, Karasuma and Kamoda meet Sagisawa and Umino. They get into a bus accident.
Summary[]
As Karasuma and Kamoda hop over the school gate in accordance with their plans to skip class, Karasuma spots the silhouette of a student on the school roof for a brief moment. Kamoda is convinced that Karasuma saw the spirit of a student who committed suicide several years ago. Karasuma, on the other hand, believes it's a classmate of his who frequently skips class.
At the park, Kamoda and Karasuma muse on their future prospects and discuss their plans upon graduation from middle school. Karasuma isn't sure what he wants to do with his future, though he has a vague notion of attending a private school in order to get into a reasonable university. He isn't sure why, but he finds himself bothered by the thought of his future. Kamoda, on the other hand, is frustrated by his subpar academic performance, and the fact that he'll probably end up at a school filled with delinquents and a mediocre basketball team.
Karasuma also asks Kamoda about his crush, and Kamoda tells him he was rejected due to his intimidating appearance. However, Kamoda remains cheerful, and leaves Karasuma alone to ruminate on the way he gave up on the middle school entrance exams when he was younger. Karasuma's mood sinks even further as he becomes convinced that he will become a good-for-nothing adult.
As Karasuma takes a photograph of a plane, Umino suddenly appears to strike up a conversation with him, asking if he was looking for the Birdman. She bombards him with questions, clearly overwhelming Karasuma. They are joined shortly by Kamoda and Sagisawa, and they begin discussing the Birdman. Karasuma wonders why the Birdman is a sign of happiness, when most urban legends are horror-adjacent, and Sagisawa suggests that it's because the Birdman saves people. Karasuma asks if it's something like an angel; Sagisawa thinks it's not quite right.
As they leave, Kamoda asks Sagisawa whether Umino is his girlfriend, and Sagisawa vaguely denies this claim. Karasuma and Kamoda feel hopeless, comparing themselves to the popular, half-Japanese Sagisawa, and are thrown further into despair when four of them end up riding the same bus returning home. Karasuma bemoans the fact that the world is unfair, with the popular people constantly at an advantage, and he wishes for the world to end. At this time, the bus driver suffers a stroke, and the bus plunges over a cliff. The chapter ends with the Birdman appearing at the scene of the accident.
